Sports Physicals & ECGs at CareSpot: What Florida Families Need to Know About the Second Chance Act

With back-to-school right around the corner, many Florida parents are thinking about camp, school, and sports physicals, along with new requirements for high school student athletes. The good news? CareSpot makes it easy to get everything taken care of in one visit.

Here’s what you need to know about physicals, ECGs (EKGs), and how we’re helping families meet Florida’s new Second Chance Act requirement.

What Is a School or Sports Physical Exam and Why Does It Matter?

A physical is a chance for us to take a good look at your child’s overall health. We review their medical history, check vital signs, listen to their heart and lungs, and make sure they’re ready for the activities ahead.

These checkups aren’t paperwork; they’re about catching any issues early so kids can stay healthy and active. Whether it’s for school, sports, summer camp, or just a routine wellness visit, a physical gives you peace of mind.

At CareSpot, we handle all types of physicals, including:

  • School, camp, and sports physicals (K–12)
  • Routine wellness exams
  • Pre-employment, DOT, and occupational physicals

We also offer on-site labs, x-rays, immunizations at our 45+ locations across Florida making CareSpot your one-stop shop for urgent care!

What is an ECG and Why Is It Important for a Sports Physical?

An ECG (also called an EKG) is a quick, painless test that checks how your heart is functioning by recording its electrical activity.

It can spot irregular rhythms, past or current heart issues, or other conditions that might not show up during a regular physical. For kids who are active in sports, it’s an extra layer of protection that gives parents and coaches confidence.

Florida’s Second Chance Act: What Parents Should Know About Sports Physical Requirements

In June of 2025, Florida passed the Second Chance Act (SB 1070) to help protect student athletes from hidden heart conditions. The legislation was largely sparked by growing awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes, often linked to undiagnosed heart conditions. Several high-profile cases nationwide, where student athletes collapsed during practices or games, also contributed to the push for change. These incidents highlighted the need for earlier screening and prevention, leading to stronger advocacy from medical professionals, families, and athletic organizations.

Starting with the 2026–2027 school year (effective July 1, 2026), the law requires at least one EKG screening for:

  • All incoming 9th-grade student-athletes
  • Students in grades 10–12 who are participating in FHSAA sports for the first time

An ECG done anytime after July 1, 2024 counts, so you don’t have to rush if you’ve had one recently. Returning athletes aren’t required to get a new one, but many families are choosing to do it anyway for extra peace of mind.

The goal is simple: keep our kids safe while they play the sports they love. Learn more about this requirement here.
