DOT Physicals
DOT Physicals at CareSpot
What is a DOT Physical
A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical evaluates whether commercial drivers meet federal health and safety standards to safely operate a commercial vehicle. CareSpot offers convenient DOT physicals performed by certified medical examiners.
What to Expect
During your DOT physical, the provider will review both your past and current medical history, and medications. The exam includes:
- Vision and hearing tests
- Blood pressure and pulse check
- Urine testing
- A physical examination
The provider will determine whether you meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards and how long your medical certificate will remain valid.
What to Bring
Bring the following to your appointment:
- A valid driver’s license or photo ID
- A current list of medications and dosages
- Glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids, if applicable
- Your current DOT medical certificate, if available
- Relevant medical records for existing health conditions
If you have any of the following medical history, you may also need to bring the items listed below:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
If you use a PAP or CPAP device, please bring a compliance report showing at least the past 90 days of use, or the time since your last DOT certification if that period is shorter.
Non-Insulin-Treated Diabetes
Bring the results from your most recent hemoglobin A1C tests. If you use insulin, additional FMCSA documentation is required. Ask our center what you need before your visit.
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Recommendation: If you take medication for high blood pressure, take it as prescribed before your DOT physical unless your healthcare provider has instructed you otherwise. Before your visit, consider limiting caffeine, nicotine and energy drinks, which can temporarily raise blood pressure. Arriving a few minutes early to sit and relax before your blood pressure is checked may also help ensure an accurate reading.
Recent Surgery
If you have had surgery since your last DOT certification, bring:
- A clearance letter from your surgeon
- Information about any current restrictions
- Recent test or lab results
- Records from your most recent follow-up visit
The provider may request additional documentation depending on your condition and recovery.
DOT Physical FAQs
Do I need to save my spot for a DOT physical at CareSpot?
- Walk-ins are welcome during hours of operation. If you prefer to plan ahead you can use our save your spot option.
Who can perform a DOT physical?
- DOT physicals are performed by providers who are certified and listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. This may include a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.
Can I use health insurance for a DOT physical?
- DOT physicals are not billed to health insurance. You can pay the self-pay rate, or your employer may cover the cost if you have employer authorization.
What if my DOT physical results have not appeared on my driving record?
- First, contact the CareSpot center where you had your exam so the medical examiner can check for submission errors. If the information was submitted, contact your state driver licensing agency to check whether it was posted to your record. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the FMCSA National Registry Technical Support Helpdesk at (617) 494-3003 or fmctechsup@dot.gov.
How Long Is a DOT Medical Certificate Valid?
A DOT medical certificate may be valid for up to 24 months. Some medical conditions require more frequent monitoring and may result in a shorter certification period.
